Medifast Diet: Best Food

Over the past couple months, several people have asked my opinion on the best Medifast Food. My quick answer would be that I like 99% of the food. But then I decided to make a list of my top 10 favorite Medifast Diet foods so folks who are new to the diet and want to order a custom food package will know what I like and what is considered by most people on Medifast to be decent diet food.

So here you go. These are my Top 10 Picks for Medifast Food and in the order I like them the most. Number 1 being the best, of course. I hope you find it helpful in choosing your custom food meals package.

Best Medifast Food

  1. Maple and Brown Sugar Oatmeal - I have listed this item first because of its versatility in baking with my Medifast Recipes. It is hands down the most important item in my order. I usually order 8-10 boxes a month because I do quite a bit of Medifast baking experiments. Out of the box with 5 ounces of water it is great. I'm not a big fan of hot oatmeal cereal but this isn't too bad especially with a dash of cinnamon and nutmeg.
  2. Chocolate and Vanilla Diabetic Shakes - I am not diabetic but these shakes are higher in protein and less sweet. So when adding sugar free syrups to them to change the flavor, the altered shake is not too sweet.
  3. Homemade Chili - I like Medifast chili right out the box with 4 ounces of water. But when I'm not in a hurry, I add two tablespoons of salsa and a dash of chili powder. It's awesome!
  4. Beef Stew - Mixed with water straight from the box, the beef vegetable stew is good. But sometimes I add a couple tablespoons of salsa and 1/4 cup of green beans (which is part of my daily green portion) to the stew. The additional vegetables add volume and is more filling, although Medifast does not recommend mixing Medifast food with our Lean and Green meals.
  5. Carmel Nut Bars - I use all of the Medifast bars as convenience foods only. This means that I don't eat them unless I'm in a situation where I cannot make a shake, take along muffins in a baggie or microwave some soup. All of the bars have an average of 70 calories more than other Medifast meals. That may not seem like much, but if you ate one a day for a week, that's 490 extra calories and possibly an additional one or two pounds less on the scale. My favorite Medifast Bar though is the Carmel Nut. They are especially good when slightly heated (approximately 15 seconds in the microwave). Then eat with a fork slowly savoring the flavor. I always keep one in my purse in case I get into a situation when I cannot eat any other type of Medifast food. It would be rare if I ate more than 2 bars a week. My husband who is not on the Medifast Diet, loves them too.
  6. Vanilla Pudding - I'm listing the vanilla and chocolate pudding separately on the Best Medifast Foods lists unlike I did the diabetic chocolate and vanilla shakes. This is because I use them mainly for different purposes. I am currently using the regular vanilla pudding, but I think I'll try the diabetic pudding the next time I order to lessen the sweet taste. The vanilla pudding is good right out of the box mixed with water. But most of the time I mix it with sugar free syrups or a teaspoon of sugar-free, fat-free Jello pudding to change the flavor. This gives me an unlimited number of flavors. I also add it to a few muffin recipes such as my Pudding Cakes. But mostly I eat it as a pudding with added custom flavors.
  7. Chocolate Pudding - The chocolate Medifast pudding is great right out of the box too, but most of the time I use it in recipes like my Chocolate Muffins or Brownies, Chocolate Fudge, Chocolate Scones, etc. It's flavor is intense and really is hard to change with a sugar free syrup of any flavor without adding a great deal of sweetness to it. Flavor Drops will change the flavor slightly without adding sweetness, but it takes quite a bit of drops to notice any significant taste difference with certain Medifast food products because the flavoring Medifast provides is already pretty strong - Get 10% OFF Flavor Drops with Coupon Code: DEFR10FAST
  8. Chocolate Bars - This bar too is good, but it is rare if I eat one straight from the package. What I do is chop them up and use them as chocolate chips in my recipes like in my Chocolate Chip Medifast Muffins. Yummy! When you use them as chocolate chips, just be sure to remember to add an additional MF meal. For example, if you chop up a bar and add it to a Medifast muffin recipe that yields 6 meals, you'll have 7 meals. So be sure to make 7 muffins instead of 6.
  9. White Cheddar Crisps - After more than two months on the Medifast diet, it is rare that I get hungry between meals unless I get too close to 3 hours or over 3 hours for my next meal. Most weeks go by and I don't have a Medifast snack. But when I do, I reach for the White Cheddar Crisps. They add about 70 more calories to my day, so I need to take that into consideration before I reach for them. Trust me; they are good.
  10. Chicken and Wild Rice Soup - - For a nice change and a warm alternative to chili or stew, my first pick from the Medifast soup category would be the Chicken and Wild Rice soup. Add an ounce of shredded chicken breast for an occasional treat. Be sure to deduct it from your daily Lean portion. Note that Medifast does not recommend we routinely mix Medifast foods with our Lean and Green meal. But on occasion, it is an acceptable option. The reason for this is because they want to teach us to eat 6 small meals a day spaced out evenly. I personally wouldn't see the harm in it more often, given that the portion size of 7 ounces of chicken breast and 1-1/2 cup of broccoli seems like a lot of food after having mostly liquids all day. But then I'm not Medifast, so we'll conclude they know the effectiveness of their program better than I do. {grin}

Man Defrag, you are making me want to start this diet right now.This list is definitely helpful. I specially love the thing with the recipes, sounds yummy. I will be ordering my first month's supply in about 2 weeks, and I certainly can't wait. I am still trying to visualize what I will look like thin, but am having a little trouble, hopefully Medifast will help =)
P.S. I absolutely love your blog!

I'm glad I could be of help, Nohely. Visualizing yourself thin sure helps. I have an old photo of myself when I weighed 155 that I have on my refrigerator door. It serves as a constant reminder of where I want to be. Hopefully, I'll see you the Medifast community board in a couple of weeks then! :)

Hi again, have you ever tried the hot drinks from MF? I am going to place my first order and am interested in getting at least one of them. I am so used to starting my day with either a hot chocolate or cappucino. I am just curious about the taste. Thanks.

Hi Nohely. Yes, I've tried both the Medifast Cappucino and the Hot Chocolate. They are good but for my taste buds they are a little on the sweet side. I have them occasionally per the box instructions. Some folks add sugar free Marshmellow syrup to them, but I've not tried that yet. I also used the Hot Chocolate in my Medifast Brownie recipe which is addictive and feels very sinful but it's completely legal on the Medifast plan. I have also tried the Chai Latte several times, but I didn't care for it. I personally don't care for the taste of ginger but many people say it tastes similar to Starbuck's Chai Latte. I hope this helps, and it's good to hear you'll be starting Medifast soon!
