Surviving a Summer Holiday While on Medifast

Today is the start of the Memorial Day holiday and there will be many types of events happening this weekend. Many of my clients will be attending graduations, parties, picnics, memorial services and weddings. If you are concerned about surviving a summer holiday, here are a few tips that have worked for me and my clients to ensure staying on the Medifast program and not feeling deprived. I hope you have a safe, happy holiday weekend.

Medifast Summer Holiday Tips

  • Drink More Water - Now that summer is here, it should be easier to drink more water. Water is a natural appetite suppressant. So drink up!
  • Smoothies - Have you made a smoothie out of your Medifast shakes yet? Summer is the best time to start. Just blend crushed ice with your Medifast shake and chill out by the pool.
  • Shake-sicles - Freeze your shakes into shake-sicles using freezer treat molds. Works great and makes a meal last longer.
  • Combine Your Shake Flavors - Freeze your shakes into ice cubes and pop them into your glass. Slurp while letting them melt slowly. Or drink 1/2 vanilla shake with 1/2 chocolate shake ice cubes combining the flavors. These are really yummy when mixing up the fruit flavored shakes!
  • Pre-Plan Your Day - When attending a picnic or event, you will have the most success if you preplan your day. Determine first thing that morning what you will be eating and at what time. If you will be eating your Lean and Green meal at a picnic for example, take your own Lean and Green meal just in case there isn't anything there that is on the program. You'll be glad you did. This is just one weekend out of 52 this year, so don't let one weekend interfere with your progress. You can do it!
  • Healthy Pot Luck - If you are taking food to a pot luck event, take an appropriate Lean and Green dish like salad and grilled chicken. Then you'll know for sure that there will be something there you can eat.
  • Special Occasion Desserts - When a special occasion occurs I break out some of my favorite Medifast recipes. These are recipes I only make for myself when I know others will be eating dessert and I don't want to feel deprived ... like my Medifast Brownie recipe. I've got another fav recipe I'm working on that I'll announce next week if it turns out the way I think it will.... {smile}
  • Avoid Skipping Meals - It's really important not to skip meals anytime while you are on the Medifast program. But it is really essential during occasions when you will be around a lot of tempting food. Skipping meals will make you hungry and being hungry may lower your resistance to go off plan.
  • Avoid Alcohol - As much as you might be tempted, drinking alcohol while on the Medifast program isn't recommended. Alcohol contains high sugar and calories. It will take you out of the fat burning state and it takes at least three days to get back into it. Alcoholic drinks with low calorie claims can lower your resistance to eating off plan. Remember, you are on a low calorie weight loss system so it will not take you long to feel the effects of alcohol no matter how much alcohol you have been used to drinking. Avoiding alcohol on the Medifast program isn't forever - only during the weight loss phase.
  • Stay Active - Stay active and moving this holiday weekend so that you are not tempted to go off plan and you are burning fat too. Think of how great it will feel to lose weight during a holiday when everyone else is gaining! You can do it ... I know you can!
  • Still Tempted? Then ... Have an Extra Medifast Shake! - If you are still having temptation problems, have an extra Medifast shake. We would rather see you have an extra 100 calories of a healthy Medifast meal than go off plan and have 1,000+ extra calories of unhealthy foods. One extra Medifast shake will likely not take you out of the fat burning state and is a lot better for your body's nutrition than high fat or high calorie foods.
