When and What Medifast Meals to Eat
Medifast Question ... "I read somewhere that I have to eat my first meal within 1 hour of waking up, is this right? Also, how many of the 5 Medifast meals should be shakes?" ~Darissa
My Answer ... "Hi Darissa. I've not heard that before and couldn't find any reference to it in the Startup Guide. I've contacted Medifast's Nutrition Support regarding this question, and will let you know their answer. I eat my first meal when my stomach tells me it's time, of course, taking into consideration that I'll be eating 6 meals spaced approximately 2-3 hours apart. I get up most days at 5am and eat my first meal around 7am which is just before I go on my daily walk. I figured this timing based on the fact I need to eat 6 meals and space them all 2-3 hours apart and I'm awake an average of 16 hours a day. My related article, "6 Meals Spaced Evenly Apart", might help you.
There isn't a required amount of shakes to drink on the Medifast 5 and 1 plan. Personally, I vary my Medifast meals so that my body doesn't become too accustomed to eating or drinking too much of one Medifast food. In a typical week I generally have 5-8 shakes. I prefer varying my Medifast food meals because in the real world after I get into maintenance I won't be eating the same thing for each meal every day. To me it's a more realistic approach to meal planning. I hope this helps you." ~Defragged

Hi Darissa. Here's what Medifast Nutrition Support said: "You can eat your first Medifast meal when ever you would like, however we do recommend it is sometime in the morning, so we can jump start your metabolism. One hour after you wake up is ideal, but sometime in the morning is necessary." I hope this helps you.
